Pregnancy massage vs regular massage: what is different?

A pregnancy massage and a regular massage share a name and a purpose, but they are not the same treatment. The differences come down to four things: how you are positioned, which areas are worked, the pressure used, and the training behind it.

This is why you cannot simply book a standard massage when you are pregnant and expect it to be adapted on the spot. A pregnancy massage is set up for a pregnant body from the start.

Positioning is the biggest difference

A regular massage usually has you lying face-down, and sometimes flat on your back. Neither works in pregnancy. Lying on your bump is impossible, and lying flat on your back later in pregnancy is uncomfortable and not recommended.

A pregnancy massage is done on your side, supported with pillows under your head, against your bump, and between your knees. It is comfortable, stable, and lets the therapist reach everywhere that needs work without any pressure on your bump.

Areas worked and pressure

In a pregnancy massage the abdomen is not worked at all. The focus is on the areas that carry pregnancy’s strain: the lower back, hips, shoulders, neck, legs, and feet.

The pressure is adjusted too. A pregnant body is often more sensitive, and the goal is steady, releasing work rather than the deepest possible pressure. A pregnancy-trained therapist also keeps certain areas light and knows how to position you trimester by trimester.
