Calves like rope by the third run of the week. Shoulders that creep up at your desk and never come down at the gym. You stretch, you foam-roll, you take the rest day. The same muscles are still tight by Thursday.

Around here your options are a sports injury clinic: strip lighting, weights bench in the corner, built around blokes’ rugby injuries, or a salon massage that strokes the skin and never reaches the muscle.

Sports massage is the third option: slow, deep, specific work along the muscle fibre, friction where tendons attach, pressure that's calibrated to you rather than inflicted on you.

I've held the VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy since 2012.

Sports massage or deep tissue?

Same table, same hands: the difference is focus. Training recovery and specific muscle groups: book sports massage. Years of desk-built tension with no event in the diary: deep tissue may fit better.

Both are 60 minutes from £60, and if you book the wrong one, the consultation sorts it before the work starts.

Pressure that's adjusted with you, not done to you

  • “Will it hurt?” Firm is not the same as bruising. The pressure is checked with you as it happens: it goes as deep as the muscle needs and no further.
  • “I’m not really an athlete.” You don’t need to be. Gym aches, running niggles and desk tension respond to the same work.
  • “I’ve got an actual injury.” Massage supports recovery, easing the tight muscle around a niggle. A new or acute injury should see a physio first, and I’ll tell you if that’s you. The consultation is part of the hour, not a sales step.

The women-only part is why you'll actually let the work happen

Deep work only works if you can let it happen. The studio is a log cabin in a quiet garden: one door, one table, one therapist, and the only people who ever walk in are women.

Same hands every visit; your tight spots remembered, not re-explained.
