A jaw you keep finding clenched, even when nothing's wrong. A sleep that isn't working: you're in bed eight hours and still tired. Or just a low-level weight you can't quite name.

Most massages ignore all of this. You get undressed, you get the same blend as the woman before you, and you leave smelling of the house oil.

Aromatherapy massage is different when it's done properly. The oils are chosen for what you're actually carrying (stress, disrupted sleep, aching muscles, tension that won't release) and blended for you after a consultation, not poured from a bottle on a shelf.

The massage itself is full body, flowing and unhurried, but the oils do work of their own. Your nervous system responds to them differently than it responds to unscented massage alone.

This is the treatment women rebook. Not because it felt nice at the time, but because of how they felt on the drive home, and the night's sleep they had afterwards.

Wow, wow, wow — I've just had THE BEST EXPERIENCE… the oils used were phenomenal & the knowledge of aromatherapy really blew me away.

What is aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage combines therapeutic touch with essential oils derived from plants. Different oils have different properties:

  • Lavender: widely used to support relaxation and sleep.
  • Bergamot: for stress and low mood.
  • Eucalyptus: for congestion and muscle tension.
  • Frankincense: for grounding when anxiety is the primary complaint.

The oils are diluted in a carrier oil and absorbed through the skin during the massage.

The difference between a true aromatherapy massage and a massage that happens to use nice-smelling oil is the selection process. In a proper consultation, the therapist asks what you're dealing with, chooses oils suited to it, and blends them to the right concentration for your skin and health.

You don't get a signature scent. You get something made for you.

At Essential Massage, every aromatherapy session starts with a consultation. The oils are allergy-checked and chosen for you. The blend changes when your needs change.

What to expect in your session

When you arrive, I'll ask you a few questions: what's going on in your body, anything that's been bothering you, any allergies or sensitivities, any health conditions I should know about. This isn't a form-filling exercise. It's the part where I work out what to blend.

The massage is full body and takes the whole hour (or 90 minutes if you book the longer session). You're covered throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any time.

The oils are warmed and applied with slow, flowing strokes; the technique is specifically designed to maximise absorption alongside the therapeutic touch.

Afterwards, most women say the room felt different: quieter, more settled. Some find they're surprised by how deeply they relaxed. A few notice the effect most clearly when they get home and realise they've stopped clenching.

Pressure that works with you

Aromatherapy massage is not light-touch by definition. The pressure is adjusted to what your body needs, checked with you as the session progresses.

If you're carrying muscular tension alongside stress, the work reaches the muscle. If your main need is a nervous system that won't quiet down, the pressure stays more flowing. I read what the body tells me and adjust.

The consultation is how I get that right. It is part of the session, not an add-on.

If you want the touch without the oils doing extra work, Swedish massage is the simpler starting point.

Who you're booking with

I'm Francia (Fran) Gregory. I've been practising since 2008 and I hold a Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies (VTCT, 2010). I'm a current member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, and the FHT register publicly lists both Aromatherapy massage and Massage with aromatherapy oil blends against my name. You can check this yourself: fht.org.uk/users/gregory159094.

The business name is Essential Massage for a reason. Essential oils have been part of my practice since I trained. They are not a finishing touch added at the end; they are doing as much of the work as the hands are.

I hold FHT-accredited pregnancy massage training and can offer a safe, adapted treatment where oils are carefully selected for pregnancy.

This is a women-only studio. One therapist, same person every visit, in a private log cabin in my garden in Stoke-on-Trent. Not a spa. Not a chain. Somewhere quiet where you can actually let your shoulders come down.
